6 Reasons Christians Should Know How to Write

Introduction

The ability to write is an important skill to possess. Not only does writing enable clearer thinking, but it likewise can be an aid to clearer communication. To the Christian, writing is an invaluable tool to be used for God’s glory. Below I’ve listed 6 reasons Christians should know how to write effectively.

1. Writing Can Bring Glory To God

“Let these things be written unto another generation: and the people that shall be created shall praise the Lord:” Psalm 101:19

Obviously there are lots of writings in this world that do not bring glory to the Creator, but as Christians, what we write should bring glory to Him Who is the Master Author. What we write will more than likely stick around on earth for longer than we do – other generations will read it. It’s up to us to write what is honoring to our Creator so that when others read it they “shall praise the Lord.”

2. We Can Teach Others Through Our Writings

“For what things soever were written, were written for our learning: that through patience and the comfort of the scriptures, we might have hope.” Romans 15:4

Our writings have the ability to teach people in ways we cannot even imagine. If we learn through reading, we can teach others through writing. But by writing we also teach ourselves, because a writer is never master of his craft. There is always more that can be learned.

3. Writing Is a Form of Communication

“All writing is communication.” E.B. White*

When we write, we are communicating. Whether or not we plan to publish our work, whether or not we intend to let anyone else read it, we are communicating when we write. Writing puts our thoughts down in readable form. And if our thoughts are centered on the Savior, it will be clearly communicated through our writing.

4. Our Writing Can Lead Others To Christ

“Many other signs also did Jesus in the sight of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God: and that believing, you may have life in his name.” John 20:30,31

If our writings are truly a reflection of how we live, and our life is a true reflection of Christ, then what we write has the tremendous power to tell others about the Savior. We might never know the full impact of our writing, but it may very well win others to Christ.

5. We Can Spread Joy

“And these things we write to you, that you may rejoice, and your joy may be full.” 1 John 1:4

True joy comes from God, and when we write what is pleasing to Him, we help to spread some of that Heavenly joy. Not the giddy, earthly kind of “happiness” that is quick to fade away, but a deep abiding peace.

6. We Can Change the World

“With the right words, you can change the world.” E.B. White*

Our writing truly does have the ability to change the world. We may never see the impact of our writings, but there is so much of the picture that we will never see or understand in this life. Even if we never hear from our readers, there are people out there who will be impacted by what we write – and they might just be the world-changers of tomorrow.

Conclusion

When we write, we are impacting the world for generations to come. Whether or not we see the effects of our writing, it is still there. Through our writing, we can spread joy, lead others to the Savior, bring glory to God, teach others, and change the world. All of these are reasons that Christians should know how to write effectively.

If you have never learned how to write effectively, I encourage you to take some time to master this important skill. Not everyone is called to be a writer, but writers aren’t the only people who write. 😉

So what are your thoughts?
