What I Made: A Prairie Style Circle Skirt

tablecloth

It’s been a while since I actually made a new garment, so one day, I looked through my fabric to see what I had to work with.

In the “scraps and extra” drawer, I found a old circular tablecloth I had been saving to make a skirt. That, I decided, would be my next project. I had put it off long enough already.

Making the Skirt

First, I had to cut a waist hole in the center. I am very glad I double checked my measurement calculations, or I would have ended up with a hole much too big.

Even as it was, the waist hole is perhaps slightly too big, but it is close enough to work.

I knew I needed some kind of opening so that I could actually get the skirt on, so I measured 6 inches down from the hole, pinned it there, and cut down to the pin. The plan was in to insert a zipper, but first I needed something to bind those raw edges.

Since I had the extra circle of fabric leftover from cutting out the waist hole, I cut it into several strips which were just long enough to bind the edges of the zipper insert.

Waistband

For the waistband, I contemplated several fabrics, but the only one that appeared to “go” with the rest of the skirt was a plain white cotton. (I think it was cotton. And it was actually a little off-white.) So I cut out the waistband, pressed it, and pinned it in place.

Skirt zipper

But first, there was the zipper to insert. I decided to use an old zipper salvaged from some other long-gone garment and basted it in place. Then after a bit of time, and thankfully not too much trouble, I was able to machine-sew it on firmly.

I then sewed the waistband on and, finally, the clasp (which I had to snatch from another garment). And with that, the skirt was finished!

The Finished Product

It was really such an easy project, and I love how it turned out. I did find out part way through the process that the tablecloth I made it from was not actually a circle, but a bit more of an oval. So I was stuck with an uneven hem. But in the long run, I’m still happy with the skirt. There were no hitches to making it, and it turned out very nicely for such a quick project. I might just start collecting old circular tablecloths from now on. 😉
